Reflective exercise: Working with complexities

Consider the following scenarios:

• At age seven, Saima was sexually abused by her financially powerful uncle and fled with her mother and father to the UK from South Asia following threats of violence towards them. She attends school and has been assessed for a therapeutic project due to her sexually inappropriate and aggressive behaviour.

• George has been convicted of sexually abusing young boys over a period of 40 years when he was a church youth leader. He is 77, of white Irish heritage and has been released from custodial remand to reside in a probation hostel and to have a treatment programme.

• Slavoj, who is Croatian, has been found guilty along with several other military colleagues of being involved in the systematic rape of ‘enemy’ women during the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. His defence was that he was following orders during wartime.

• Harry has been suspended from school following a series of incidents where he touched girls on their bottoms. He is living with foster-carers after being neglected by his biological parents. He is 11 and of white British heritage.

Using Milner et al’s first two assessment stages of ‘Preparing for the task’ and ‘Collecting data’, what ideas do you have in each scenario about how to go about doing this? What do you think you would have to take into account?
